troops on it is side of the militarize zone separating from south korea. as well as nearly 30,000 u.s. forces. not only are they within strikes distance of the launch site, a long-range rocket shows north korea is on its way to developing technology to launch a rocket at the united states's west coast and hawaii. officials tell cnn that the working assumption is that the north koreans got outside help from others, including iran. so today's launch is raising some huge concerns. let's go to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. i assume they are pretty surprised and alarmed by the successful launch over at the pentagon? >> look, wolf, because of everything you just mentioned, indeed, the u.s. military, the intelligence committee have been watching north korea for days now 24/7 because they did expect to launch and they announced it. but they were having technical problems so a lot thought it wouldn't happen until next week. when it happened last week, there was a surprise. the north korean anchor's excitement was clear. >> announcing the launch of a long-range rocket that put a nor

have important breaking news. nbc news is reporting u.s. officials say their worst fears have been confirmed the syrian military has loaded chemical weapons inside bombs. nbc says those same officials say bashar al assad's forces are awaiting final order to use those loaded missiles against syria's own people. this video posted online, which we can't independently verify, purports to show syrian missiles that have been modified to carry chemical and biological weapons. obviously, this is a sober development in a situation that seems to be getting worse by the day. pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins me along with cnn contributor and former cia officer bob baer and on the phone fran townsend. barbara, i know you're working to confirm this nbc report. how much would this change the situation? if u.s. military is going to act to prevent assad from gassing his own people, it would seem, if they loaded this stuff into weapons, the time to do it would be at hand. >> right now i can tell you, anderson, if this turns out to be true, even if not, the u.s. military, the cia in a full-

with some sad news today. a u.s. navy seal killed during the daring rescue of an american held captive in the heart of afghanistan. good morning i'm jon scott. jenna: i'm jenna lee. when we talk about the american captive, we have a picture of the doctor whose live was saved. he is dylan joseph, a native colorado. he was in afghanistan for humanitarian work when i was kidnapped by the taliban in a province east of kabul. national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at pentagon with more. jen, do we have any details on the american who gave his life to save this doctor? >> reporter: they're waiting to contact the family so the military does not release the identity of the seal killed in that rescue attempt. we know he was a member of "seal team 6". not necessarily a member of the same group that carried out the usama bin laden raid. there are about 200 members of "seal team 6". this man, as you said, gave his life for his fellow american. here is a statement that was read by the spokesman for isaf today. >> it has been decided to start the operations since the assessment the

's palace. we'll have a live report from cairo. but, first, u.s. military plans about possible action against syria are changing. senior pentagon officials tell cnn the syrian government could be escalating the civil war. there are new concerns the assad regime is preparing to use chemical weapons. let's get to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, how does this change the u.s. military's syria plan? are we talking u.s. troops, boots on the ground? >> well, not at this point, clearly, deb. but what we do know is that u.s. officials tell us that they are updating some of the military options for action against syria's chemical weapons capability, why are they doing this? of course, we chatted about this in the last several days. officials say they do have the intelligence now that syria has filled aerial bombs with deadly sarin gas. haven't moved it to airplanes yet, but this is very concerning because that, of course, would be the next step. so once you have the deadly bombs, the u.s. has to look at what the options could be, what they might want to target to essentially

the u.s. economy is continuing to heal and continuing to heal from the wounds inflicted by the worst downturn since the great depression. this is obviously similar to what we heard in past months. but the president or -- certainly the white house pointing to this as proof that his economic policies should continue. specifically in this reaction. they point to that bush era tax cut for middle class americans that's set to expire along with tax cuts for all americans. here at the end of the year saying that that needs to get pushed through. we are not seeing really the frenzy, obviously. we got so used to that frenzy of reaction coming out ahead of the election. and it certain sly in the a frenzy we haven't heard -- heard from the rnc. they say similar to what they always say. while a downtick in the unemployment tick is unwelcomed news, unemployment remains painfully high, conversely to what president obama or what the white house saying pointing to his policies as not working for the economy. we haven't heard from the speaker's office i don't believe yet but he will be talking before

taste this soup. >>> welcome back. u.s. stock futures are flat this morning after climbing higher yesterday but gains were limited because of fiscal cliff concerns. >> we'll be hearing that until it's fixed. the november jobs report is released at 8:30 a.m. eastern today. economists forecast 8% unemployment, ticking up from 7.9% in october. 77,000 jobs added which is a lot slower growth than was anticipated. you have to go back to the summer to see growth that small. it's likely that superstorm sandy skewed the numbers, perhaps dramatically. economists at deutsche bank expect only 25,000 jobs added after they studied the hurricane effe effects on jobs. it was difficult for the labor department to collect data during and after that storm. in today's report, we'll watch four sectors hardest hit by the storm, manufacturing, retail, leisure and hospitality and temporary help industries. mark sandy said aside from the storm the job market turned in a good performance for the month. this simpreis impressive given uncertainty created by the presidential election and the fast-approaching
